Listen To Reading

Choose and listen to one of the following:

Make text to text, text to self, and text to world connections about your selected story.

Read To Someone

In pairs take turns reading with a partner. While reading locate words that use some of the dependable rime units. Add the words you find to the dependable rime anchor charts.

Read To Self

Choose a book to read for 20 minutes from the Book Week shortlisted tub. Rate the book and leave a short comment about one interesting connection.

  1. Did the book remind you of another book/movie/character?
  2. Did the book remind you of a personal experience?
  3. Did the book remind you of something that happens in the real world?

Work on Words

Create a poem using 6 different dependable rime units.

Respond to Reading

Complete a C.S.I thinking routine (Colour, Symbol and Image), explaining why you chose each element of the thinking routine.

Why did you choose that particular colour?

Why did you choose that particular symbol?

Why did you choose that particular image?

Week 5 – Daily 5 Activities

Listen to reading

Learning Intention:

We are learning to listen to information in documentaries/reports and identify research facts.

TASK:

Select three of the below documentaries or reports.  While watching, identify three facts presented in each (write them on a post it note) and add to the appropriate fact chart.

We are learning to identify topic related information to form an information report.

TASK:

Learning Intention:

We are learning to spell high frequency words correctly and to match meanings to prefixes.

Visit Study Ladder and complete, Popular Spelling Rules.

Week 4 – Daily Five Reading Activities

Read to self

Learning Intention:  We are learning to focus on a text for a sustained amount of time so that we can gather and learn information.

TASK: Select one of the information texts from the collection in the classroom and read independently.

Work on words

Learning Intention:  We are learning to identify key, important words in an information text and create a glossary defining these words.

TASK: Watch Making a Glossary

Using the Emus Information Reportidentify the key, important words and create a glossary for this text.

Respond to reading

Learning Intention: We are learning to identify the topic of each paragraph and formulate subheadings so that a reader can easily access information.

TASK: Read each paragraph, highlighting the facts in each sentence.  For every paragraph write an appropriate subheading.

Emus Information Report

Listen to reading

Learning Intention: We are learning to listen to reading, follow instructions and identify the related information on a topic.

TASK:  World Heritage Kakadu Information Display

Listen to an explanation about Kakadu.  Listen and follow the instructions, identifying information and organising into categories.

 

Read to someone

Learning Intention:  We are learning to read with expression and fluency so that we can be understood and entertaining to others.

TASK: Select one of the information texts and read aloud to a partner.

Daily 5 Activities – Week 3!

This week we are learning all about information reports.

READ TO SELF

Read interesting facts about Great White Sharks, Emperor Penguins, rainforests and Pandas. Add an interesting fact from each report to our FACT WALL, as well as finding information about an animal of your choice.

WORK ON WORDS

Information reports contain lots of compound sentences.  Complete the Study Ladder task about compound sentences.  Once you have completed the task move on to the compound sentence activity sheet.

 

 

Respectful Relationships

In Social and Emotional Learning we are learning about how to have respectful relationships with others.

Students are learning that they have a choice with how they act and respond to different situations.  Certain responses are respectful while others are not respectful.

RESPOND TO READING

Read the step by step, sequenced instructions to make your own chatterbox.

WORK ON WORDS

In small groups play the Bossy Verbs board game.

You will need a dice and small coloured counters as markers for each player.

Take it in turns to roll the dice and move around the board.

When you land on an instruction or command you must read it aloud and perform the action.

The first to finish is the winner!

Respond to Reading

We are learning to use the author’s words and pictures and our own knowledge to infer the meaning of a text.

Read the Garfield comics.  Select two comics from slides 3-6 and answer the questions as a post.  Remember to write in full sentences, restating the question in your answer and to use your knowledge and evidence in the text before making a response.
